VOLUNTEER TRAINING OPPORTUNITY: Healthy Parks & Healthy Creeks

Saturday, September 21st, 2019 from 9:00am to 12:00pm (CT)

About

Healthy creekside areas contribute to healthy creeks and can also provide shade, recreational opportunities, flood storage and wildlife habitat. Join us for a classroom presentation, creekside demonstration, and an opportunity for hands-on learning! City of Austin Watershed Protection Department staff - in coordination with our volunteer partner organizations - will:

  • Provide an overview of the benefits of healthy floodplains
  • Provide an overview of how to restore creekside areas
  • Demonstrate creekside restoration approaches
  • Demonstrate invasive plant management

Participants will be able to apply many of these approaches to manage invasive plants in other areas of their parks, as well.

This training is ideal for:
  • New creek adopters who haven't received training in restoration approaches
  • New park adopters who haven't received training in restoration approaches
  • Long-time park and creek adopters who would like a refresher on restoration approaches and invasive plant management practices
  • People interested in adopting a creek or park in their neighborhood or who would like to learn more about creek and land stewardship
  • It's My Park Day project leaders who are planning invasive management projects

Free coffee, breakfast tacos, and snacks will be provided! Please wear weather-appropriate clothing. We will be outside near the creek, so close-toed, sturdy shoes, as well as lightweight, long pants and long-sleeved shirts are recommended.
