The City of Austin Park Rangers are planning to continue our annual wintering grassland bird surveys at Louis Rene Barrera Indiangrass Wildlife Sanctuary! This orientation is for new participants to acquaint themselves with the site, the survey protocols, and expectations.
By registering for this event, you are also signing up for the surveys themselves; these will involve substantial hiking over uneven ground, physical exertion (beating the grass), and (hopefully) bird identification. Unfortunately, given current restrictions on gatherings in Austin, we cannot promise that every participant in the orientation will have the opportunity to take part all three surveys, but we will make every effort to ensure that everyone gets the chance!
This orientation is remote; a link will be provided closer to the date. Please provide a good email address to which we can send this link when you register.

Wondering if you should register to volunteer? Based on the CDC guidelines, we are asking you the following questions:
- Have you been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19? See the CDC’s risk assessment guidance.
- Do you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19? Symptoms can include a cough or shortness of breath or at least two of the following: Fever, Chills, Repeated shaking with chills, Muscle pain, Headache, Sore throat, New loss of taste or smell. See the CDC’s symptom information.
