Graffiti Abatement Program

About

The City of Austin, Graffiti Abatement Program aims to foster community partnerships for the prevention and elimination of graffiti and to provide graffiti removal assistance in the community.

Description: The Graffiti Abatement Program responds to citizen reports of graffiti through the 3-1-1 system. A crew of four staff eradicate graffiti Monday-Friday. Last year, the Graffiti Abatement Program removed 16,649 tags. This program is much needed as well as volunteers to continue eradicating tags throughout the City of Austin. By removing graffiti quickly and as a community, we send a message to those that vandalize that both the City of Austin and its residents will not tolerate tagging nor the needless destruction of public and private property.

History:
An ordinance was passed on March 23, 1995 making property owners responsible for removing graffiti from their property. However, this ordinance cannot be enforced unless the City has a program in place to assist property owners in the cleanup. The Graffiti Abatement Program assists property owners in cleanup, as well as responding to 3-1-1 reports of graffiti.
