Austin Organic Gardeners

About

Since 1945, the Austin Organic Gardeners have shared information about successfully raising vegetables and ornamentals without using harsh fertilizers and toxic pesticides that harm the soil and disturb the ecological balance.

Austin Organic Gardeners is the oldest organic gardening club in the U.S. as recognized by Rodale Institute and in 2020, during the pandemic, they celebrated 75 years as a club.

The club’s philosophy is that human and animal health depends on the health of the soil that produces their food. Healthy soil, which is rich in organic matter, abounds with organisms that convert minerals in the soil into forms plants can use. The well-nourished plants growing in these soils are better able to defend themselves against attacks from insects, diseases, and other pests.

For their monthly meetings, AOG welcomes guest speakers (online and in-person) that are free and open to the public on the second Monday of each month. Gardening topics vary and recordings are available to watch on their YouTube channel here.

Members volunteer weekly to maintain the vegetable teaching gardens at Zilker Botanical Gardens. Lessons are shared from the garden through social media and their free newsletter. Volunteer opportunities can be found on the event calendar on their website.
