    David Chapel Fall Festival

The University of Texas at Austin organization, African American Male Research Initiative (AAMRI) served on October 31, 2016. I volunteered with 20 men at Davis Chapel’s Fall Festival for the Eastside Austin Community. They needed volunteers to man the number of booths, direct community members (children/ youth) in appropriate directions, help mentor the grounds, and set up. I volunteered from 4-6pm setting up for the event.
Upon arrival, I met with the overseer of the event, Tashia Coleman and church deacon, Mike Overton. They were quick to welcome me, as so they were to direct me to my first volunteering assignment. I worked outside setting up a fencing barrier for the festival, with one passage opening for visitors, in addition to set up festival tents. Amongst my efforts, Mr. Overton was there to assist. As we worked, we informed each other on our backgrounds.
Mr. Overton, originally from Oklahoma City, is a resident of the Eastside Austin community who ministers as a deacon, electrician, and teacher for Davis Chapel. I, Kalen McGuire, originally from Dallas, Texas, currently a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, ministers as a visual artist and singer. Amongst our discourse we talked about our personal struggles and relationship with Christ as men. Furthermore, we went on to discuss our goals in life which are relative to the theme of “serving other”. He claimed, serving others is where most impact is made, and I agreed.
To conclude, I learned that serving others is needed in our lifetime, because it is about the personal impact being left on someone else. With Mr. Overton as my point of reference, I have a counterpart in the community where we can exchange our efforts for our common goal to serve others.
