When I first found Parks and Recreation, I was actually looking for employment in the spring of 2020. I was then hired right before the pandemic. I was interested in the field of work because of prior history with the city of Durham parks and recreation and my interest in furthering a career in physical education at a grade school level.
What sparked my interest in establishing an intern position with parks and recreation was the accessibility I had prior built and to decide if I honestly want to consider a career with grade school children physical education.
The majority of my time was split between 3 different recreational facilities monitoring youth exercise programs … Each facility had one special time in common. This special time was SNACK TIME. As I split my time (eating snacks) throughout these facilities, I noticed a slight difference in the snacks that were typically served at each facility. At one center the kids were served a cheese stick, an individual pretzel packet, a juice box. The next center served a bag of chips and a water bottle and at the third facility the kids were served cinnamon buns and the upper grade(s) levels were allowed to walk over to the gas station next door (with supervision, of course.)
This experience was a learning curve. At the beginning of the internship I would have never expected my biggest takeaway would be differences in snacks served but it served a little light of the demographics of each location and the differentiation in centers depending on the surrounding area.
believe if anyone is interested in interning with Parks and Rec. should expect the unexpected. This person should also carry communication skills because not only will you be in communication with your supervisor but you will be communicating with other staff, children and possibly local school educators. This person should also have a sense of patience and tolerance; you will be working with kids and kids aren’t always going to listen to your directions or want to do an activity that is chosen for that day or complain about who’s snack is better. You have to combat those outbursts with calmness and patience.
